Wild encounters truly deserve a post of their own. Wild encounters truly deserve a post of their own. Every national park has its own Big Five, but what stays with you is the rare privilege of sharing space with these magnificent animals. Co-existing with them for a week humbled me deeply. This is their land, their right of way — and we are merely visitors in their world. Despite safari jeeps vying for the best viewing spots, it is the deep understanding of animal behaviour and the vast experience of the guides that make sightings ethical and safe. Guest safety is always their utmost priority. No matter how excited we feel during a sighting, we learn to hold back — not to disturb the animals. And strangely, the animals themselves are so composed, calm, and dignified 🫣 The Big Five at Masai Mara National Reserve are:
Lion, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, and Black Rhino.
We were fortunate to spot prides of lions, elephants, and cape buffalo, but missed the elusive leopard and the extremely rare black rhino. The highlights of our Masai Mara safari were unforgettable — playful lionesses with their cubs, witnessing the mating of a lion and lioness (learning that they mate every 30 minutes over four days!), and watching an intense attempt by four lions to hunt a cape buffalo, only to be fiercely chased away by the herd. The very next day, we witnessed an after-kill of a weakened buffalo by the same lion group — raw, real, and humbling nature at work.
These are memories that stay etched forever.

Had saved the best safari experience in Kenya for Had saved the best safari experience in Kenya for the last… no points for guessing — it had to be Masai Mara National Reserve.
To truly experience wildlife at its finest, choosing the right camp is everything. Our choice was Mara Ngenche Camp, perfectly located at the confluence of the Talek River and the Mara River. Most of the cottages overlook the Talek River, and right across lies the famed Mara Triangle.
The river is alive with hippos and crocodiles — and I never imagined hippo grunts could be such effective alarm clocks! 😄 At first, I genuinely thought someone was kick-starting a non-silencer bike outside our tent 🫣.
One of the biggest advantages of staying inside the reserve is the freedom to enjoy both morning and evening safaris, all included in the stay. Wildlife is literally around you, which means no long drives chasing sightings — especially priceless during the Great Migration season.
The most unforgettable experience? Sundowners in the Masai Mara by the Mara Ngenche Team— watching the sun set while the moon quietly rises on the opposite horizon. Pure magic.
Meals here are all à la carte, with the chef thoughtfully catering to every single request. And nothing beats sipping wine around the bonfire, sleeping in the tent surrounded by nature’s soundtrack — occasional hippo grunts, insect calls, distant lion roars, and the eerie laughter of hyenas.
Watch this space for an exclusive up-close wildlife experience from the Masai Mara.

After a brief overnight stay at Lake Naivasha, we After a brief overnight stay at Lake Naivasha, we set off early towards Lake Elementaita hoping to spot the iconic flamingoes, en route to our next camp. Along the way, we paused at the Equator Line, where a fascinating water demonstration brought geography to life—showing the Coriolis effect and how water drains differently across the hemispheres.
Sadly, Lake Elementaita turned out to be a disappointment, with unusually high water levels caused by heavy rains in the surrounding hills, leaving little sign of the flamingoes. Undeterred, we continued onward to Mbweha Camp, a lovely camp bordering Lake Nakuru National Park and located within the Soysambu Conservancy.
This is definitely a destination worth at least two nights before heading to the Masai Mara. Warm hospitality, memorable sundowners, and an enriching evening walk with a knowledgeable local guide made our stay truly special.

Morning safari at Samburu National Park with Juliu Morning safari at Samburu National Park with Julius, our incredibly knowledgeable naturalist. We were unbelievably lucky to spot the Samburu Special Five — the elegant Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Gerenuk, and Beisa Oryx.
Add to that countless sightings of my spirit animal — elephants — and the thrill of encountering a lioness and a leopard in the wild. Truly one of those magical safari mornings that stays with you forever.

From the land of looms & lores to the land of coff From the land of looms & lores to the land of coffee and the Kodavas! We sneaked away for a short break to the newly opened CGH Karuthakaad Mane—and honestly, it felt like coming home.
From Bejoy’s warm welcome and briefing, to being picked up in a 4x4 from the nearest town (that drive itself was an experience!), everything was so thoughtfully done. Despite the current LPG shortage and limited resources, the chefs put together the most comforting, homely meals—yes, even my tea-time pazham pori craving was taken care of 😊
What really made the stay special was the team. Yoga mats rolled out on the lawn, quiet stargazing moments, and an early morning trek up to the estate’s highest point overlooking the beautiful Karuthakaad (Black Forest) & updating my limited knowledge of birds & insects . Simple, slow, and so heartwarming.
We truly wished we could have stayed longer 😊
